Enthusiasm varies about earlier start time for Sunday alcohol sales ...

MOBILE, AL (WALA) –

The Mobile City Council has approved a change in the city’s alcohol ordinance. And it’s a change supporters say will help some companies bottom line.

The ordinance amends the Mobile City Code to allow alcohol sales at restaurants starting at 10 am on Sunday instead of noon. The Alabama State Legislature had passed a bill last year allowing that statewide, except for Mobile County. This year, the legislature passed a bill allowing municipalities in Mobile County to vote to do the same thing.

A sponsor of the ordinance, Council Member Levon Manzie, said, “It hasn’t been permitted in the past. There are some who have done it without permission.”

The Downtown Mobile Alliance supported the ordinance with a sign saying “Free The Bubbles,” and said this would make Mobile competitive with other surrounding counties.

Carol Hunter with the Alliance said, “Some of the restaurants tell us that, they do for their Sunday sales, up to 30 percent of their total revenue comes from alcohol sales, so, not only will this make them more successful, but it will add tax revenue to the city and county.”

FOX10 News asked people in downtown Mobile what they thought about the change.

Keisha Pendleton said, “That’s a good idea. Anything to drum up sales. Mobile’s a sleepy town. You’ve got to have some party going on. Party on Saturday night, carry party on Sunday morning. That’s what you do.”

Others said, “I’m really indifferent on it. If they want they can, you know. It’s no big deal to ” and “I think it’s fine. Actually, I wish they would have done it a long time ago.”

Alliance members said the if the law can be legally advertised in enough time, the change could go into effect this Sunday.
